Covid-19 Update: Exhibition and Events Industry To Reopen On 1st October

In the latest update to the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines that took place on Friday 17th July, Boris Johnson announced that business events and conferences will be allowed to reopen on 1st October adhering to social distancing rules.

Following the news, some of the UK’s biggest exhibition venues – Birmingham NEC, ExCeL London and Olympia London – announced on Monday that they were reopening and that the Nightingale Hospital facilities within were to be scaled back, allowing most of the venue capacity to be used for events from 1st October onwards.

For many, one of the biggest questions for those venues was how exhibitions could have taken place whilst the hospitals remained present. The latest clarification from these sites has addressed those queries, whilst simultaneously easing concerns as to whether the venues would be safe to visit.

Whilst we are yet to hear from other locations regarding reopening plans, it is likely that other venues are likely to follow suit very soon.

What does this mean for the events industry?

With venues beginning to reopen, we will soon see details of specific events going ahead as we begin to take steps to restore the nation’s economy.

Whilst we may see some caution at first, confidences will grow as time goes on and we will begin to see a return to normality. Steps are being taken by organisers and the industry is working hard to provide safe and secure environments that ensure events run smoothly and successfully. Social distancing rules will remain active throughout, together with strict cleaning regimes to ensure the safety of both exhibitors and attendees.

ESSA’s Project Confidence has been building momentum over the past couple of months to demonstrate the importance of the events industry to the economy and to show that events can indeed be organised and held safely.
